Plattsburgh Town Free Activities

The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will be offering free hiking, arts and crafts, and fishing programs for all town residents throughout the month of August. All participants must register between now and one week prior to the specific program. Participants can register by stopping by or calling the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department at 151 Banker Rd or 562-6860.


Hiking -- On Aug. 15, there will be a day hike to Pok-O-Moonshine Mountain, south of Keeseville. On Aug. 22, there will be a day hike to Lyon Mountain. Both hikes will leave the Town Office at 9 a.m. and return at around 3 p.m. Bus transportation to and from the mountain and supervision will be provided. The trip is open to any youth age 12 and up. Any adult wishing to go, please call us for availability.

Fishing -- Don Lee and his friends from Trout Unlimited will again hold a free two-day fishing program for any town resident 10 years of age and up, Aug. 12 and 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. All equipment will be provided. Both sessions will be at the Saranac River in Morrisonville. Participants 10 and 11 years of age must have adult supervision with them.

Art week -- The town is offering a multi-project art program at the Town Office. This year all participants between the ages of 8 and 12 years of age will attend two-hour sessions Monday, Aug. 18 through Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon each day. Projects include papermaking, clay molding and more.

Football Camp

The Beekmantown Youth Commission will sponsor a football camp for children in grades 3-12 Aug. 4-8 at the Beekmantown Town Hall field from 9-11:30 a.m. The cost is $3 for Beekmantown residents and $30 for non-residents.

Parents may register their child at the Beekmantown Town Hall. Registration forms will also be available and accepted at the town hall field the first morning of camp from 8:15-8:45.

On Aug. 9, the group will attend a Plattsburgh North Stars game with the cost $3 per child, if the child would like to attend.

Plattsburgh FC Soccer tryouts

UPDATE: Rescheduled from August 10 to August 12. The Plattsburgh F.C. soccer club will hold tryouts on Sunday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Plattsburgh State Field House turf field at the following times:

U-10/U-12 boys and girls at 5 p.m.

U-14 boys and girls at 6 p.m.

U-16/U-18 boys and girls at 7 p.m.

All players should arrive at least 15 minutes prior for registration. The tryout sessions are open to existing PFC players and new players are welcome. Players should attempt to attend both sessions.

Beach Days--Dannemora

Fun at the Beach Days offers all kinds of events for children in Dannemora this summer at Chazy Lake Beach, with the next event -- Family Day -- scheduled for Saturday, July 26. Games, races and food are in store from 1 to 4 p.m., with hamburgers and hot dogs provided. Families are asked to bring their own beverages and a dish, chips or dessert to share. The Back Porch Band will play at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, is Games Galore! and Fear Factor! Among the activities planned are kickball and an obstacle course.

Thursday, July 31, is Kayak Day, put on by the Clinton County Youth Bureau with lessons for beginners and up. Participants may bring their own kayaks; children under age 8 should bring their own properly-fitting life jacket. "It's All About Me" Day is set for Tuesday, Aug. 5, when kids will create a poster about themselves, a family tree with pictures and photo cube. Participates must bring their own photos.

At Aug. 12's Science Day, kids will create a cyclone, erupt a volcano, paint a plane or birdhouse to take home and build bridges. Explore Nature Day is Aug. 15, when kids can decorate their own bug keeper and learn how to capture, identify and keep their own critter. And on Tuesday, Aug. 26, the activities include sand art, magic color and watercolor.

The Town of Dannemora Youth Commission events, all from 1 to 4 p.m., are open to all children, but those under age 5 must have a parent along. Participants are asked to bring appropriate shoes, sun block, swimsuit, towel, snack and drink. Every day will include swimming and games. For more information, call 735-4033

Beekmantown Soccer Camp

The Beekmantown Youth Commission will sponsor a soccer camp for children in grades 1-12 July 28-Aug. 1 at the Beekmantown Town Hall fields from 9-11:30 a.m.

The cost is $10 for Beekmantown residents and $30 for non-residents. The cost includes a soccer ball.

Sailing Basics Classes

UPDATE as of 7/23/08: The City Recreation Department's Learn to Sail Program gets under way next week with openings remaining for children and adults. There will be two sessions, starting July 28 and Aug. 4, with the youth meeting from 1-4 p.m. and adults, 5-8 p.m. For more information, call the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department, at 324-7709.

Following info is from 7/16: The City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department is registering individuals for its Sailing Basics classes for youths (12 and older) and adults (18 and over). The classes are open to city and non-city residents. The fee is $175 with each class limited to 20 students.
The first session for each class will be July 21 to 25 with youth classes from 1 to 4 p.m. and adult classes, 5 to 8 p.m., at Wilcox Dock, off Cumberland Ave. Participants will learn the basics of rigging, points of sail, sailing maneuvers, safety and recovery and more. Students must provide their own personal flotation device.

Canoe and Kayak Program

The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Dept is offering a free canoeing and kayaking program during the week of July 14 at the Cadyville Beach for ages 10 and older. Free Tennis Clinic

The Clinton County Youth Bureau and Village of Dannemora Recreation Department will offer a free tennis clinic Thursday, July 17, from 2:30-4 p.m., at the Saranac Central tennis courts. The clinic is suited for beginner tennis players with no prior experience necessary.

Boys and girls ages 7-17 are invited to attend. Tennis racquets and balls will be provided. For further information, contact the Youth Bureau at 565-4750.

Summer Soccer

The Town of Schuyler Falls is holding registration for its summer soccer program, which is open to town youths ages 4-14. Registration forms must be completed and returned to the town hall by Thursday, Aug. 7.

Forms are available at the town hall, Morrisonville Redemption Center, Rock's Grocery and Tops Market (Irish Settlement Road).

Fall Youth Soccer

The Town of Plattsburgh is currently accepting registrations for its fall youth soccer program, which is open to boys and girls ages 6-14. If there is enough interest, an instructional program will also be provided this year for children turning 5 years old by Oct. 31. This mini-mite session will be once a week at a park to be announced.

Parents can register their children for either program by completing a registration form at the Town Offices on Banker Road by Friday, July 18. No registrations will be taken by phone and those signing up after the deadline will be placed on a waiting list. Those who pre-registered in April do not need to register again.

Ultimate Frisbee Clinic

The Clinton County Youth Bureau and Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will provide an Ultimate Frisbee clinic at Cumberland Head Rec Park from 1--3 p.m. on Monday, July 21. Boys and Girls ages 13-17 are invited to attend. Pre-Registration is required.

Kids "Fast Feet" Track Meet

A Kids "Fast Feet" Track Meet, for kids ages 4-12, will be held Saturday, July 19, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Plattsburgh High School Track. Entry fee is $5, and entry is free for Fast Feet Track Camp athletes.

Events will include 50m, 100m, 400m, 1500m, 4x100 relay, jumping and softball throw. The meet is sponsored by the Plattsburgh Recreation Department. For more information, contact the recreation department, at 324-7709.

HeartSmart series begins July 2

The HeartSmart for Kids program from CVPH and the Town of Plattsburgh are again sponsoring the Fun Run/Walk series at the Cadyville Recreation Park. The seven-week program will get under way Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The fun runs are set up for age groups and distances as follows: Under 4- 1/4 mile run/walk, ages 4-6- 1/2 mile run/walk, ages 7-10 and ages 11-14- 1 mile run/walk and there is an Open Division- 5K run.

Participants who attend four out of seven fun runs will receive a free t-shirt.
