Flag Football 2012

City Recreation Department to offer Indoor Youth Flag Football
The City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will offer an Indoor Youth Flag Football League at the Crete Memorial Civic Center starting on January 23. The league will be split into two divisions and offered to 9 to 11 year olds and 12 to 14 year olds.

The league will run on Monday afternoons/evenings for eight games, followed by a playoff game for the top two teams in each division. Registration is $44 for a city resident and $49 for a non-city resident and can be done online at http://www.plattsburghrecreation.com/. Only individual registrations will be accepted and teams will be formed by draft after the first day. The league will only support a maximum of 44 individuals per division.

"This is the first time we've been able to offer something like this," said Superintendent of Recreation Steve Peters. "We have been frequently asked for additional indoor sports for our area youth, and we are proud to offer flag football at the Crete Civic Center."

Two of the eight games will be "sandlot style" where teams, under appropriate supervision, will play without coaches and referees.

"Many adults remember a time where we could go out in the neighborhood and play sports on our own. The end zone would be from the neighbor's tree to someone else's mailbox and we would referee our own games and adapt our own rules. That type of play reinforces many interpersonal skill sets like sportsmanship, cooperation, negotiation, honesty and integrity. It's crucial for our kids to develop the same skills that we have, but unfortunately it doesn't happen as much as it used to. Recreational sports, and youth sports in particular, aid in the development of these lifelong skills and is hoped that we can rekindle some of those skills with our ‘sandlot-style' games."

The City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department implements a variety of fitness and recreation programs and maintains seventeen parks throughout the city as well as the Municipal Beach, the Crete Memorial Civic Center, and the City Recreation Center. The department's mission is to strengthen the quality of life for residents of the City of Plattsburgh, surrounding communities and visitors by professionally instituting safe and affordable programs, services, and facilities designed for all ages, cultures and abilities.
